Before 2000, the front of the building featured a 25-year-old ficus tree on the sidewalk and no other plants. The rear had a large staircase and was covered in concrete.
This is what the front of the building looked like. It faces north and receives minimal light.

With three cut-outs along the front of the house, three sidewalk boxes and a planted side entrance leading to the basement, the result includes eight palms and flowering shade plants.
